A Middle Road, La Penitence resident has been identified as one of the gunmen who robbed businessman Godfrey Scipio, called “Saga” earlier this month and then fled following a shootout with police ranks.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect, who was detained on Thursday, was picked out from a police lineup yesterday.
Police have already charged a taxi driver who allegedly drove the getaway car, and in whose car two firearms were allegedly found.
On the day of the incident, Scipio, 58, had just parked his motor vehicle in front of his D’urban Street residence when four armed men drove up alongside in a white Toyota Raum motor car.
One of the men discharged a round in Scipio’s direction after which the bandits relieved Scipio of jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash.
The businessman was also struck repeatedly in the head and had to be
hospitalised. A police patrol subsequently intercepted the getaway vehicle on the Cummings Lodge Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
On seeing the ranks, the robbers opened fire. One of bullets passed through the front windscreen of the police vehicle and lodged in the back seat.
After the police returned fire, the gunmen fled on foot in the direction of the UG bus park. However, the driver of the getaway car was detained.
The police allegedly recovered a 9mm. pistol with 15 matching rounds, a Ruger 40 automatic pistol and 40 spent shells, and a sum of cash from the car.
