Barbadian based Guyanese boxing pugilist Cleveland Fraser arrived in Guyana yesterday afternoon to keep his ring date with Kurt Bess for the local cruiserweight title at the Mackenzie Sports Complex and from all appearances is set to turn in a good performance.
Tired after the journey, Fraser opted to stay away from the gym yesterday afternoon but is scheduled to open camp at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) this afternoon. Shortly after arriving in Georgetown Fraser, who measures 6 feet four inches and hails from #53 Village Corentyne, declared that he is here to win the bout and the title that goes with it. “I am in superb condition and am rearing to go,” said Fraser.
He further intimated that he once represented the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) before migrating to Barbados in 2006. During that time the lanky pugilist earned his license to fight professionally and so far has chalked up 2 wins from 4 fights. In his last outing he lost to Trinidad based Guyanese, Shawn Corbin.
Fraser said that he has been able to analyze the last bout and was working on his shortcomings. He admitted that he knew little of Bess but brashly stated, “I am a bully fighter and will bully my way to a victory; that belt belongs to me.”
The card would be co-promoted by Dexter Osborne, a Lindener with a desire to have the sport resuscitated in the Mining City. Mr. Osborne said that residents of his region are hungry for fistic entertainment and he expects the ProAm initiative to be a starting point towards this objective.
In other fights, Super/middleweights Edmond DeClou and Winston Pompey would have a second go at each other after their first fight earlier this year in a draw. Both fighters had remained adamant that they were ‘done in’ prompting the organizers to arrange the rematch.
There will also be the regular accompaniment of 4 amateur bouts and the organizers are awaiting the list from the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) executives.
