St Mary’s Anglican Church at Albion, Corentyne, recently served a hot lunch to some 45 persons in the community and distributed more than 20 food hampers.
According to Vestry member and youth of the church, Romel Ayasammy, the event coincided with the season of sacrifice and giving, Lent. “We are observing the period of Lent right now. It is a time of giving and sharing as the Good Master taught us to do in the Holy Bible,” Ayasammy said.
He said that it is not anything new, that the church members give back to the community and members of the church.
Parish priest of St Mary’s, Fr George Chuck-a-Sang, said that he was pleased with the gesture, more so because the church always reaches out to both young and old, as it had on that day. Many, both senior citizens and children, benefited from the lunch and hampers.
“I wish we had a lot more young people who can revitalize the church. But in the Anglican Church, they’re so shy to come forward.” He blamed this on a lack of spirit.
“I think when you have the Spirit, it burns you inside. So like that, everybody hiding behind one another and so on. A few will come forward but they’re not so eloquent. I am hoping and praying that the Spirit will come into the church and burn everybody like fire. So that they can say, ‘What can I do to help?’ When you don’t have the fire, you just lay back down and you hide”, the priest said.
He added that many people find it a pleasure to remain in their ‘comfort zone’ and out of the limelight in the church.
“The Spirit has to work in you. You have to have the belief in God and change your life. Ayasammy thanked the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC), Dave’s Television Station (DTV-8), Ansa McAL, Sterling Products Limited, Guyana Beverages Company, Comfort Sleep, and Nand Persaud Company for their assistance.
