Police on the West Bank of Demerara are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a man that was found floating in the Canal # I conservancy.
Kaieteur News understands that sometime around 14:30 hrs persons living in the area spotted the fully clothed corpse floating in the conservancy. The police were immediately notified.
The man has since been identified as 23, year-old Junior McCallum, a mason of Westminister Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara.
The dead man’s mother Silivie Seebajan told this publication that she last saw her son alive, yesterday morning.
She suspects foul play since her son was found floating with all his clothing on, and he was a person very fearful of anything related to swimming.
“He lef home saying that he going to wuk and is dis afternoon I get de call saying that dem find he dead,” Seebajan said.
The woman said her son was never fond of the trench since he could not swim, hence she found it strange that he would go to the conservancy to swim.
“Da boy frighten water bad, he can’t swim and even if he go fuh siwm he wouldn’t got on all he clothes,” she said.
The woman said she was told that from all indications, her son did not go to work but instead went out with friends.
“People say that he and some friends went at de back there, but we ain’t know none ah de people he went with…Something wrong there. Me son just nah gone go swimming till at de back here,” the woman lamented.
She said she received the news of her son’s death from relatives. The woman said she did not get to view her son’s remains as it was already removed and taken to the parlour.
According to Seejaban, Junior was the eldest of three children and the main breadwinner for the home. “I want the police to investigate and find out what really happened with him and his friends while they were hanging out.”
Relatives told this publication that Mc Callum was employed at National Hardware, and whenever there was no work being done, he and his friend from work would normally “lime” around the place. “His friends have to know what happened to him if they were together.”
