– Four persons lodge reports for this year
Members of the public are being advised to be aware of scam artists that pretend to be in a position to sell properties while using a false identity to pose as the owner in a bid to defraud potential buyers, according to the Guyana Police Force (GPF)
The force issued a release yesterday underscoring four reports that have been lodged this year by persons who were swindled while trying to purchase a property.
“The criminals will normally select a property owned by a person residing overseas, advertise it for sale and then use a false identity document to make the interested buyers, Real Estate agents and lawyers believe that he/she is the owner and defraud the buyers of monies paid for the purchase of the property.”
The police force is advising members of the public who are entering into such business transactions with persons whose identity they are not absolutely sure of, to verify the identities and to make checks with the relevant authorities to verify ownership of the property before making any payments.
