Fire Chief Marlon Gentle has stated that Tuesday’s morning fire which claimed the life of two-year-old Nicholas Maraj was as a result of children playing with matches.
Maraj’s three-year-old cousin, Anthony Singh, managed to get out of the building
Relatives of the deceased toddler had initially denied that matches were in the children’s hand reach.
However when contacted yesterday, Gentle said that according to findings from the preliminary investigations, the fire started on a bed in one of the bedrooms.
Initially this newspaper was told by neighbours that the fire was first spotted in a bedroom.
On Tuesday morning last fire broke out at the house which was located at Vryheid’s Lust South.
It was said that Maraj and Singh were in the house. Singh made it out of the burning house while Nicholas was left behind. Neighbours had told this publication that efforts were made to enter the building but the intensity of the blaze was too much. A bucket brigade was formed to save an adjacent house.
The children’s grandmother Phulmat Singh had left the children under the care of their great grandmother.
Nicholas Maraj was the first of two children for his mother Natasha Maraj, he however lived with his grandmother.
