An early fire gutted a building at Lot 63, D’urban Street, Wortmanville, and several pit bulls perished in the inferno.
The building was occupied by one man called “Guthrie” and he was taken into police custody, since according to neighbours, he had caused the fire.
According to George Mc Leoud, who occupied the neigbouring building that was severely scorched, his neighbour called “Guthrie” said that he lit a candle and fell asleep afterwards, but was uncertain if he accidently kicked the candle over while dozing.
George said he lives with his wife and five grandchildren, and due to the fire he lost millions in valuables which include television sets, stereos systems, a sewing machine and other electrical appliances due to the electrical over load that occurred during the fire.
He noted that the fire service was prompt and did not run out of water and Guyana Power Light (GPL) also were there to disconnect the wires from the utility pole. “But now we ain’t got no light too.”
According to another resident, some of the man’s dogs lived with him inside the house. Reports indicate that as many as 14 dogs may have died. Two dogs were saved.
Some residents also said that the occupant told the police that he only noticed the flames when he got up to feed his dogs. H reportedly tried to extinguish the fire with buckets of water.
