Plans to make the old Le Repentir dumpsite into an environmental friendly and health safety area are currently underway. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has fully funded this solid waste disposal project at a cost of US$18M.
Works are scheduled to commence shortly.
While inviting the media to the dumpsite yesterday morning for a “pre-bid meeting and site visit”, Senior Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works and Chairman of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Walter Willis, stated that there is about 60,000 cubic metres of waste that is left to be removed from the site. Works to begin capping the area with clay will be initiated after that.
Willis said that when this is completed there will also be vent pipes installed so that the gases can be released into the air. The same technique that was previously used on ‘cell 1’ and ‘cell 2’ will be used once again, he said.
The duration of this project is expected to be three months.
During the “pre-bid meeting” persons who were interested in bidding for the contract were given a tour on the site so that they could have a “feel” of exactly what the job would require.
The Senior Engineer also stated that there is about 450 metres of road from Cemetery Road that runs towards the Mandela Avenue, which is referred to as “the extension of Broad Street”.
That is also catered for works to be implemented upon at a cost of $75M, also fully funded by the IDB.
