Hunt for new Mascot begins
By Sean Devers
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in collaboration with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and Scotiabank launched its 2011 Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket programme at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion yesterday.
GCB President Chetram Singh and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Pulandar Kandhi both spoke of the importance of this programme of getting involved in the game from a young age and the benefits of participating in sports while still being successful students academically.
GCB’s Reon King said that Approximately 250 primary schools from across the country will participate in various Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket activities.
He said the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Mascot Competition should conclude on February 18 and is open to pupils between ages 7-12 while the Introduction to cricket coaching for teachers/volunteers and pre-tournament practice sessions within Schools (conducted by G.C.B Coaches) will be done next month.
The former Test fast bowler said that Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Festival (tournament) is set for next month and March while the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket lunch-time display for qualifying schools is planned for during the First Digicel Test Match between West Indies and Pakistan at Guyana National Stadium, providence on May 14 & 15, 2011.
The Scotiabank Kiddy cricket “Easter vacation Clinic” Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice will cater for a selected group of players. These players are to be identified by Coaches based on the Coach’s assessment and evaluation of the players’ ability displayed during training sessions and/or competition.
The 14 Zone winners will exhibit their cricketing prowess during the lunch break of the first Digicel Test Match between the West Indies and Pakistan at Guyana National Stadium – Providence.
Jennifer Cipriani, Scotiabank’s Manager, Marketing said many believed that 13 is an unlucky number but not so for her Bank since yesterday’s launch marked 13 years since this program was first launched in Guyana.
She disclosed that they were looking for a Mascot to replace Clarence the Crab who has retired. She said entries for the Mascot competition should be placed in boxes located at all Scotiabank branches by February 18.
The Bank official explained that while Scotiabank is a global entity they believed in building relationships locally and supporting the communities where people live and work.
“Our involvement in West Indies cricket dates back to 1998 as the official Bank of West Indies cricket, and in 1999, as the exclusive sponsor of Kiddy cricket.
“Our Kiddy program began with 87 schools and now with 250 schools Kiddy cricket is a household name, an event that our children eagerly look forward to every year,” Cipriani said.
Cipriani informed that the Banks’ ‘Bright future’ program, a cooperate-giving initiative, went global.
“This program is targeted at improving the lives of children by contributing millions of dollars and hundreds of employee volunteer time, to areas such as Sports, health, education, culture and the environment. Our kiddy cricket program is an initiative geared towards giving our children a bright future as it allows them the opportunity to realise their dreams of becoming great cricketers like our very own Sarwan and Chanderpaul,” Cipriani added.
She thanked the WICB, Ministry of Education, GCB, Teachers, Coaches and the Media for nurturing Kiddy cricket over the past 13 years.
The children present were involved in a short cricket demonstration on the ground at Bourda with the Permanent Secretary and the GCB President both taking turns at bowling to a female student who neatly clipped them both through mid-wicket with nonchalant ease.
