A detective corporal is to be charged for allegedly raping a 21-year-old prisoner at the Turkeyen Police Station in December 2009.
Kaieteur News understands that the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions instructed police on Tuesday to charge him with rape.
The incident reportedly occurred when the woman was taken to the Turkeyen Police Station for alleged simple larceny. She claims that about an hour later, a detective who was on duty at the location threatened to lock her up. She also alleged that he then took her into the CID office, removed a condom from a desk drawer and ordered her to follow him. He reportedly then took her to the Radio Room, where he had sex with the detained woman against her will.
However, he allegedly forgot to dispose of the condom, which the victim managed to conceal.
The detective reportedly released the woman after instructing her to return to the station the following day.
However, the woman told a cousin about the incident and, on the cousin’s advice, reported the matter at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. She also allegedly handed over the condom.
The detective was subsequently detained.
Some of the detective’s colleagues said that he had sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl at another location about two years ago, after the teen was picked up for wandering.
However, no investigation was conducted and the detective was subsequently promoted to the rank of corporal.
