Berbice road contractors who do not perform at optimum levels would see their services being terminated forthwith. This warning was made by the Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, in their presence on Thursday in the Boardroom of the Region Six Democratic Council.
The contractors, along with representatives from the three municipal towns in Berbice, had gathered for the signing of contracts for the construction of 78 roads, totaling some $177M.
According to Head of the Regional Works Committee, Denis Deroop, the administration experienced several problems with contractors last year and does not intend to have these problems repeated during the commencement of the road works programme in 2011. Several roads saw contractors returning to do remedial works in Berbice last year. Mustapha stated that contractors will have actions taken against them for delinquent work and his administration will recommend termination of contracts if necessary.
He promised stricter monitoring of contractors this year and asked Berbicians to show interest in the road works that will be coming to their communities.
Residents should and must report to his office if contractors are not giving of their best. “The contractors want super profits; they must give us super work as well,” Mustapha said.
He noted that prior to Thursday’s signing, several Bill of Quantities were given to the residents across Berbice.
Etching her signature on the contracts as well and present during the meeting was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Water, Deborah Montooth. The road contracts, for the first time, now fall under her Ministry and not the Ministry of Works. Her Ministry will take full control and responsibility for the execution of the works.
Eight contractors were awarded contracts to rehabilitate 34 roads in Corriverton; 10 in Rose Hall Town; and 29 in New Amsterdam. There were nearly 400 community meetings within the three towns in Berbice.
According to the officials, it is hoped that capital road works will start in 2-3 weeks which will see an addition of 36 miscellaneous roads in New Amsterdam being rehabilitated. The Region Six administration has set a goal that 250 roads will be completed in the region by the end of the first quarter of the year. (Leon Suseran)
