– $100,000 fine, 2 years imprisonment among penalties
The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is urging all State and Private Sector Agencies to develop a policy of non-discrimination against Chinese and all other Nationals living in Guyana.
By way of a release, the Commission reminded the general populace that under the Representation of the People’s Act and the Racial Hostility Act, a person found guilty of discriminatory practices can be sanctioned by the ERC with penalties imposed.
Anyone found guilty can be fined $100,000 together with imprisonment for 2 years, while under section 139 (E) of the Representation of the Peoples Act 2001, any political party found guilty of promotion of any racial act or message can be fined $500,000.
According to the Commission, a meeting was held on December 03, 2010 with members of the Chinese Community in Guyana and President Jagdeo for the implementation of a standardized system of non-discriminatory and discretionary treatment.
In addition, the ERC stated that the initiative by the Government of Guyana for ensuring Policies/Administrative Acts are non-discriminatory against Chinese should be applauded
“The Commission met with members of the Chinese community in Guyana during a consultation on June 17, 2008, and several issues were raised. Those were recorded and listed in a report prepared by the Commission which was circulated to members of the National Assembly, Office of the President and other stakeholders,” the ERC disclosed.
It was also explained that among the issues raised at that Consultation were matters of immigration – citizenship/naturalization, security – protection services and language – Chinese to learn English and locals to learn the Chinese language.
