Dear Editor,
Inspired by the brilliance of Deon Barnwell, Anthony Stanton and Collie Hercules, the trio that tormented International and Regional defences during the late eighties and nineties, Camptown’s Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington is indeed special to Guyana’s football.
Barnwell scored the last of is 10 International goals against French Guiana at the Andre Kamper Veen Stadium in Paramaribo May 1994.
Stanton last International strike was a memorable double against French Guiana at GFC February 1997 that was number (14) for Sir Anthony.
The Hitman like Stanton also finished with 14 Senior International goals. His Helmet-trick against Anguilla at the Antigua Recreation ground in the Shell Caribbean Cup in 1998 is still the most goals scored in an International match by a Guyanese.
But the man of the moment is Camptown’s Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington. ‘Powers’ surpassed Stanton and Hercules when the scored goal number three a Hat-trick against Guadeloupe during the Digicel Cup Finals 2007 in Trinidad and Tobago, that goal was the Camptown marksman 15th Senior International strike. Since then the record breaking forward has scored International goals against Suriname 2008 World Cup qualifier Providence National Stadium and a double that saw Dominica crashing out of the 2008 Digicel Cup Championship.
Please find below Codrington’s International goals in numerical order:
Goal # one vs Barbados on debut at GCC Bourda 2001: International friendly
Goal # two vs Dominica at MSC, Linden 2005: International Friendly.
Goal # three vs Antigua and Barbuda MSC, Linden April 26, 2006: International friendly.
Goal # four vs St. Lucia – GFC July 31 2006: International Friendly.
Goal # five and six vs Suriname; Ergilio Hato Stadium Willemstad, Curacao: Digicel Caribbean Cup 2006.
Goal # seven and eight vs Netherland Ergilio Hato Stadium Willemstad, Curacao: Digicel Caribbean Cup 2006
Goal # nine vs Antigua and Barbuda November 24 GCC: 2006 Group H play offs Digicel Caribbean Cup.
Goal # ten and Eleven vs Guadeloupe GCC November 26: 2006 Group H Play offs Digicel Caribbean Cup
Goal # twelve vs Dominican Republic GCC November 28: Group H Play offs Digicel Caribbean Cup.
Goals # thirteen, fourteen, fifteen vs Guadeloupe: Digicel cup finals Trinidad and Tobago 2007
Goal # sixteen vs Suriname Providence National Stadium: World Cup Qualifier 2008
Goals # Seventeen and Eighteen vs Dominica Providence National Stadium: 2008 Digicel Cup Preliminaries.
Let the records show which other Guyanese International is more prolific at the Senior International Level like this Campbellville lad, not even Alex Bunbury the Plaisance born former Canadian International Striker who finished with 16 International goals can match ‘Powers’ feat.
