Rice quality consultant Pierre Boucher of Argentina emerged unbeaten last weekend and secured First Place with 6.5 points in the RRT sponsored one–day rapid chess tournament at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club.
He drew only one game with junior player Suhai Feng of North Georgetown Secondary School. Feng won the junior category with 4.5 points.
Approximately 20 chess players participated. Seven rapid chess games (rounds) of 40 minutes each were played during the tournament.
Boucher donated his cash winnings to the Guyana Chess Federation. He explained that he made the gesture because he is pleased and impressed with the local chess body.
He added that he will do whatever he sees fit to give his support. Treasurer of the Federation, Shiv Nandalall expressed gratitude to Boucher on behalf of the local organization, noting that the Federation hopes to continue making the best of moves to promote chess locally.
Managing Director of RRT Enterprise Sean Ramrattan said he is pleased to be the associated with chess since he feels that the board game needs the “push” for the effort to succeed.
The competition was divided into the senior and junior categories.
In the senior division, second place went to Irshad Mohamed who gained 5.5 points and the final podium position went to Frankie Farley who scored 4.5 points.
Among the juniors, Rashad Hussain of Mae’s Schools gained second place, Saeed Ali of Richard Ishmael Secondary came in third and Raan Motilall of West Demerara Secondary copped fourth place.
