Atletico Roraima v K&S All Stars in feature after March Past: U20s face Linden U23s
By Franklin Wilson
The dust has settled and all systems are in place for the kick off of the 21st Edition of Guyana’s feature knock-out football tournament known as the Kashif & Shanghai.
This tournament is undoubtedly the premiere competition in this format of the game in Guyana and promises to be yet another enthralling affair among the 20 teams that have been invited to compete including the lone overseas team, Caribbean United based in the Land of the Flying Fish, Barbados.
But before the actual kick off of the tournament proper, the Grand Opening and March Past of the teams is set for today at Guyana’s premiere sporting venue, the National Stadium, Providence.
Today is a special day in more ways than one since apart from the main clash between Brazil’s Atletico Roraima against the Kashif and Shanghai All Star team and the National Under-20 side coming up against an Upper Demerara Under-23 line-up; the main game is being played in honour of two outstanding footballers, former National Captain Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard and Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules.
Both players have served their country well and while Hercules is now channeling his expertise in the area of Coaching as the Assistant in the National Senior team, Pollard is still contributing to the senior side but is almost at the end of his playing career for Guyana.
Co-Director of the Kashif & Shanghai Organisation Kashif Muhammad in an invited comment stated that they are elated to recognize the efforts of these two players and it is just the start of something special for the organisers.
Muhammad also expressed gratitude to Kings Jewellery World for donating two custom made rings that will be presented to the players apart from some other gifts.
“This will be a special moment for both Pollard and Hercules and it will also be very special for us as the Organisers as we say thank you on behalf of the nation to these two fine young players.
They have served their country well over the years and it is their time to feel the love of the nation as we say thank you for your committed service to Guyana.”
Five Trinidad and Tobago based players including Pollard arrived in Guyana yesterday for today’s game. The others are Kayode McKinnon, Carey Harris, Walter ‘Boyd’ Moore, Randolph ‘Blackhead’ Jerome, Ronson Williams and Derrick Carter.
They will team up with their local teammates in Captain Howard Lowe, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington, Dwain Jacobs, Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, Devon Millington, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Kester Jacobs, Dwight Peters, Warren Gilkes, Dwayne Ali, Clive Nobrega and Philbert Moffatt for the clash against Atletico Roraima of Brazil.
The Brazilians have promised that their style of play today will be Samba like and fans can look forward to an exciting match-up.
Hercules will double as a player/coach in today’s encounter. Head Coach is Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover. Admission is $1,000 while children under-12 will be admitted free.
