Suspicious ‘Chilean’ for court
Local police are seeking the assistance of Interpol to positively identify a suspicious foreigner who was nabbed while walking across the Berbice River Bridge last Saturday.
The man gave his name as Awaro Elwin Canonho Conoron but local police are still suspicious about his true identity.
At first the man reportedly told police that he was from Chile and that he had entered Guyana from Venezuela en route to Suriname. He claimed that he had lost his passport in Colombia.
Crime Chief, Seelall Peraud told this newspaper yesterday that the man has since made several claims about his true identity.
“We have submitted his name and fingerprints to Interpol but in the meantime he will be charged with illegal entry,” the crime chief said.
He was first held at Blairmont but was transported to the city on Monday for further interrogation.
