Dear Editor,
Rational thinking Guyanese must rally behind our daily newspapers, especially the Kaieteur News and SN. I pledged my full support to the SN for their decision to start charging a fee to access web-related content from the first day of next month.
I fully supported the increase of $20 for a copy of the Kaieteur News some time ago. Newspapers must do everything they can to ensure their existence and survival.
The traditional avenues from which they received the most of their advertising dollar have been virtually closed without any hope of reopening again.
Hence, it is through us, the citizens of this country that the newspapers depend for survival. We must lend our support at all times.
Not many persons realise the big sacrifice made by the Kaieteur News a few weeks ago when it announced that it will carry most if not all government advertisements free of cost — no charge whatsoever.
This arrangement came in the heels of Government’s withdrawal of state ads from the two popular daily newspapers and placing same on a special website.
The Kaieteur News, being the paper it truly is, threw out the offer and the Government accepted.
The ads are being published every single day, several of them, at very high costs to the newspaper, I am sure.
This is indeed a great service being done for the nation by this publication. It is not all about the money; the actions of Kaieteur News demonstrate that very much.
