GTTA National Schools’ Competition opens today
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) National Schools’ Table Tennis Competition will commence today at the National Gymnasium, following Digicel’s sponsorship of the event.
President of the GTTA, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene said that he anticipates a good tournament because of the amount of planning that went into the nation-wide event that 19 teams have already committed to participating.
The categories will be Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 with players from Linden, Berbice and Bartica coming against the Georgetown schools. Competition will be in both singles and doubles playoffs with a minimum of two players allowed per school.
“We expect to have a healthy competition and we are happy that Digicel is supporting the youths and are helping to channel them in the right direction through their support for sports. They must be applauded for their commitment,” Greene said.
He informed that apart from the trophies and medals, Digicel will also be giving away book vouchers since it is a schools’ tournament. He said the aim is to continue the proliferation of the sport with the support from the corporate community.
Events and Public Relations Officer, Shonnett Moore told the media that again Digicel continues to lead with its commitment toward the development of sport in Guyana. She said the donation is another advancement of their sport development plan.
“As you know, Digicel is committed to the development of sport in Guyana. This is not the first time we have partnered with sport in Guyana,” Moore noted, before GTTA General Secretary, Godfrey Munroe informed that the association’s Strategic Plan is on the move.
