– Black believes selection process flawed
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce wants athletes and their coaches to be honest with the association on fitness so that Guyana will always be able to send its best representative teams overseas to compete.
Boyce was directly referencing information that Alika Morgan’s coach, Leslie Black had known that she was unwell prior to her selection to represent Guyana at the South American 10km road race in Suriname but failed to correctly inform the association.
“I am hoping that in the future, athletes and their coaches will be honest with association that if they are not fit, they will come forward and say that they are not fit,” Boyce said, adding that the AAG had no information on Morgan’s health before selection.
Morgan performed below her best in Suriname last Saturday and subsequently it was disclosed in several sections of the media that the athlete was feeling “weak”. Morgan had collapsed after she finished the first stage of the South American race in Guyana.
“If he (Black) is saying that Morgan had a medical condition that he knew of before we selected a team, them he had a right to inform the association,” Boyce said, responding to comments from Black, who was also present at yesterday’s press conference.
Black’s position was that he does not feel obligated to disclose Morgan’s medical condition to the AAG nor the media because it is the athlete’s privacy. He said that Morgan has now opted to take a rest from competing in 10ks for the remainder of the year.
“Morgan had a medical problem. I should not disclose everything to the association or the media. Morgan was not told when she will be travelling,” Black said, adding the senior vice-president of the AAG, Cornel Rose, was informed about the athlete’s condition.
Black said that he told Rose about Morgan’s condition. Rose contended that what Black said was that Morgan collapsed twice during the 10k in Guyana and he did not interpret that to mean if the athlete was ill because that was not what was said to him.
“I feel the whole procedure in selecting and notifying athletes must change,” Black said, making it clear that he took Morgan to Suriname via road because the AAG informed him that he had to buy an airline ticket since Morgan was unable to leave with the team.
The AAG had bought airline tickets for its national long distance team, including Morgan, to compete at the second stage of the 10k in Suriname. Black said that he had to take Morgan to a doctor the Thursday that the team was expected to leave.
