Digicel Guyana Inc, who is the major sponsor of the 2010 National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships, yesterday handed over the medals and trophies that will be awarded to the event’s Management Committee.
Digicel’s Head of Sales and Distribution, Nalini Vieira said that their sponsorship of the event is part of their commitment toward the development of sports in Guyana since she would like to see the event evolve into consistently producing star athletes.
“We look at this sponsorship as supporting and giving back to sports in Guyana; we hope that we can build and take Championships to another level,” Vieira said, adding that the company is glad to be part of channelling young athletes in the right direction.
The Digicel Head of Sales and Distribution believes that the sponsorship has set a good example for corporate Guyana and hopes that the Championships gets more support in the future.
She said that Digicel is looking at long-term commitment to the event.
The National Schools’ Championships will be held at the National Stadium, November 9-12 and they have handed over the custom-made medals and trophies to reward the athletes.
They will be providing polo jerseys for the officials for the three days.
President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colin Bynoe said that he was pleased with how the Championships are evolving. He said that he anticipates that the Championships will grow as planned and become one of the major sport events in Guyana.
“We are elated that the Schools’ Championships have evolved. I’ve always felt that the branding of the Championships will ease some of the financial burden of the Ministry of Education, which is necessary at this time,” Bynoe told the media.
He accepted Vieira’s pledge for long-term commitment, stating that he hopes they will be able to work on a bigger and better package in the future.
Principal Assistant Secretary with the Ministry of Education, Reginald Brotherson also lauded Digicel’s support.
