Security workers claim maltreatment
Dear Mr. Editor,
The workers of the private security companies viz Kanhai’s Security Service and RK Security Service in Region Two are experiencing a serious injustice as it relates to their earnings. They do not have any representative body to turn to.
In addition, they operate in an atmosphere of fear of dismissal. Consequently they endure the unjust treatment from their employers and hope for the best which seemingly is not in sight.
The security companies have so much disregard for there workers’ welfare that they pay their starvation wages of $100 per hour. On the Essequibo Coast five tennis rolls are sold for $140.
It means that the workers have to work for almost one and a half hour to buy five tennis rolls.
The companies do not pay the workers overtime, time and a half, and double pay for Sundays and holidays.
To add insult to injury, the workers regularly and consistently have to work a period of seven weeks to receive payment for one month.
The effects of this situation are listed herein: disconnection of lights, disconnection of water, repossession of hire purchase, forced to credit foodstuff and face embarrassment because of late payment.
The workers are therefore calling on the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to stop this illegal advantage and ensure that the workers are given a fair wage along with overtime, time and a half and double when due.
They are also asking that the companies pay the workers on time i.e. on or before the end of each month.
Ii is suggested that if there is any doubt as it relates to the above, that you Mr. Editor and the Ministry conduct an on the spot investigation into the allegations.
The workers are unsure about what will happen to the outstanding sums due if the companies’ contract suddenly comes to an end.
