Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), under its renowned athletes’ rehydration beverage, Gatorade formally publicised its sponsorship of the upcoming National Schools’ Championships yesterday at a presentation ceremony at the Ministry of Education.
The local beverage company will be providing all the athletes during the Championships with the necessary quantities of Gatorade at a Gatorade Station which will be set up to accommodate such an extensive distribution of the globally acclaimed beverage.
The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and Ministry of Education will be hosting the 50th National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships during November 9-12 at the National Stadium, which is expected to have over 1600 athletes competing in four days.
Gatorade Brand Manager at DDL, Alexis Crawford indicated at that the company was pleased to be associated with the largest schools’ sport event in the country.
She said that having the valued product associated with the Championships is a step forward.
“We are very pleased to be making this donation to the National Schools’ Championship and we are more than happy to get this international brand associated with the event. It’s the number one sports drink in the world,” Crawford said at the ministry’s boardroom.
In addition, the DDL Brand Manager thanked the National Management Committee for creating the opportunity for Gatorade to be involved.
She said that she anticipates that the athletes will be taking full advantage of the Gatorade station at the National Stadium.
President of GTU, Colin Bynoe said that the contribution from DDL comes at a time when they are trying to make the event larger than it has ever been. He said against that background, it was felt that greater corporate support was needed for the Championships.
“We have always been thinking of ways that we can make this event larger than it has ever been that is why we have several new things that will be happening this year. The contribution of $1.2 million means that DDL supports this vision,” Bynoe indicated.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Head of the Physical Education Department, Nicholas Fraser said that he is quite certain that the athletes will find the Gatorade very useful as they compete for supremacy over the four days of competition.
