With just three days to go before the first bell sounds for the 9th edition of the ProAm boxing card, all of the principals are ready to walk the walk as they have talked the talk.
After more than six weeks of hard work in the gym, Mandessa Moses will have to wait a little longer to avenge the only loss of her career to Trinidadian, Wendy Allen. She is now slated to match punches with Leann Boodram, another Trinidadian worth her salt in the ‘square jungle.’
The promoters have indicated that the change was necessary since Allen is currently unable to keep her ring date. However, they have indicated that Boodram has been in stiff training and will be a worthwhile opponent for Moses.
The Guyanese fighter, for her part, has been honing her skills under the watchful eyes of Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels over at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym and appears good and ready to extend her winning streak. Her last bout against Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott ended favourably for Moses and she has managed to build quite a reputation for herself.
Another bout that should provide lots of entertainment is the Mark Austin/Revlon Lake lightweight encounter. Lake is a Barbadian who has had 10 fights, four of which he lost.
He drew one and won three. He has had an epic battle with Errol Trotman, who incidentally was Austin’s last victim by the knockout route.
Austin has been one of the talents emerging from the ProAm cards and to date has chalked up three decisive victories against Shawn Pyle, Errol Trotman and Cecil Smith, all seasoned and more experienced boxers that he.
His only blemish was a drawn decision against Clive Atwell and even that decision has been shrouded in controversy with the pundits arguing that Austin was ‘done in’.
His eyes are set on a rematch against Atwell but before that he will have to surpass the Lake hurdle. Fans will not want to miss this fight.
Fans would also be keen to come in time for the Atwell/Cecil Smith showdown. Smith had surrendered a decision to Austin but had felt that he had won the bout.
He has been agitating for a rematch. Obviously, the results of this fight would set the stage for a thrilling match up against Austin.
Both fighters would want to lay claim to those rights therefore fans can expect a competitive match. Simeon Hardy and Patrick Boston will start off the night’s proceeding with a middleweight scrap.
The ProAm is a joint effort of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Communications Network.
The fighters convene for the weigh in at 19:00hrs on Thursday night at the Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo Street and the action gets underway at 19:00hrs on the following night. Admission is $1,000.
