President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento along with Coach / player Theodore Henry and Captain Claudius Butts met with the media yesterday at Olympic House to report on the national team’s performance at the just concluded Commonwealth Games which was held in Delhi, India.
The president while not fully blaming indiscipline among some players as the primary reason for Guyana’s disappointing performance preferred to point to the psychological disparity and a few players lack of commitment as the key causes for Guyana’s poor results.
“You cannot go to Games of that stature and believe that is part competition and part holiday. It just will not work,” Nascimento mentioned.
He said he believed that Guyana could have and should have done better, given the kind of preparations that they had leading up to the Games.
The GRFU Head said he felt that the team’s skills and physical levels were almost on par with the other teams, but what was required was for them to make the psychological leapt to meet that of their opponents.
Butts in his remarks stated that just to be in the Village with the other teams and being part of the Games is something he will always cherish. He added that he too felt that Guyana could compete with any of the other teams, but it is just a case of playing at the required level on the right day at the right time.
Meanwhile, Nascimento disclosed that the players will now have a well deserved rest then return late November for gym work, before transferring to the field as they prepare for the World Sevens Series in Las Vegas, USA.
Giving his thoughts on the behaviour of the three boxers who absconded, the GRFU President said that is was a stupid and selfish act by them, adding that it now places other athletes from other disciplines in a very precarious position when seeking visas.
“I am, however, proud to say that rugby has an impeccable record. We have quite a few players who’ve represented Rugby West Indies on numerous occasions in the past in the USA with unblemished records.
