Popular race car driver Joseph Mark Vieira was yesterday sent on his own recognizance after answering a damage to property charge before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Vieira, 44, of 25 Lama Avenue, Bel Air Park, Georgetown, is alleged to have damaged vehicle # PFF 4597, valued at $330,000 – the property of Raymond Rutherford.
Vieira, who was represented by attorney at law Glenn Hanoman, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The lawyer then made an application for his client to be granted self-bail, on the grounds that he a prominent race car driver, and that the police had already placed him on $20,000 station bail.
Police Prosecutor Lionel Harvey had no objections to bail. Vieira was later placed on self-bail and ordered to return to court on December 1.
Meanwhile, also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Patrick Watson, who was charged with robbery under arms.
It is alleged on October 14, last, Watson, armed with an ice-pick, robbed Steven Rambajan of one laptop computer valued at $180,000, one computer bag, $2000 cash, one passport and a Republic Bank card.
The defendant, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutor Harvey did not object to bail. However, he told the court that the accused is known to the virtual complainant (VC). He indicated that on the day in question, Rambajan was walking on Regent Street, when the defendant who was in company of two unknown persons, approached him with an ice-pick and relieved him of the aforementioned articles. Subsequently the police were informed and arrested the defendant.
The magistrate granted bail to the tune of $200,000 and ordered the defendant to return to court on December1.
