The battle for supremacy in the 3rd Annual Mackeson/Digicel Sweet Sixteen football tournament continues tonight with a scorching double header when Buxton Stars FC take on Grove Hi Tech in the feature match while BK Tigers FC go head to head with the Georgetown Football Club at the Buxton Community Centre Ground, East Coast Demerara tonight.
Already, tongues are wagging and the hierarchy of the Western Tigers Club is confident that with their imposing line up they will go home with the spoils. Secretary of the club, Dexter Cush was very upbeat when Kaieteur Sport spoke with him yesterday and has promised to win this match come what may. He spoke of the versatile goalkeeper, Dereck Carter, who had clinched the award for the best goalkeeper in last year’s edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football extravaganza. The young goalie has been improving rapidly and is expected to extend his theatrics between the uprights to this game.
He would be supported by the expertise of his captain and defender, Sherman David who will depend on a plethora of stars to ‘bring the bacon home.’ He has at his disposal capable midfielders Dwayne Ali, Bevon Moseley and Ryan Thomas while Vassal Cansellar would be shoring up the defence. With such capable strikers like Gideon Payne, Nedd Fraser and Lorenzo Duesbury, the Tigers would feel that their chances are as good as any.
Coach of the GFC team, Peter Lashley scoffed at the lineup while saying that the game is played on the field and not based on how formidable the line up appears. He said that his boys are a little rusty since they have not been playing a lot of competitive football. “That may be so but the guys have demonstrated the type of commitment and dedication that augurs well for their success in this game,” he said.
Commenting on his expectations for this game Mr. Lashley said that he has been the coach of the Western Football Club before taking up his present appointment in the GCC squad. He said that he is quite aware of their work ethic. “I have instructed my boys to go out there expecting a tough battle and have urged them to give 110 percent,” said Mr. Lashley. He did not negate that his boys could lose the match. “If the opposition is to win they would have to dig deep,” he said.
Meanwhile, football buffs were treated to two action packed encounters when play continued at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground, Sunday evening last. In the first game, Fruta Conquerors needled Mahaica FC 1-0 to advance to the next round, while Rhythm Squad earned a similar decision over Ann’s Grove. Trevon Lythcott netted for Fruta Conquerors in the 88th minute while R. Ramsay breached the Ann’s Grove defence in the 12th minute to propel Rhythm Squad into the next round.
The first whistle sounds at 18:30hrs tonight.
