Thirty-eight year-old Guyanese all-rounder Luke Latiff was voted Sweet Revenge Cricket Club’s Player of the Year at the Trinidad & Tobago club’s Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Saturday night.
Club captain Latiff, who played for Berbice both at youth and senior level in his homeland before migrating the T&T in the early 2000s, got the nod ahead of former Guyana first class player Robin Brown, John Seuraj, Sheldon Thomas and Rudolph Moore in the “A” team.
Latiff, the son of Berbice Umpire Raifik Latiff, had 10-76 runs against Invincible to highlight his impressive showing during the season. A member of the Guyana 18-man under-19 squad which finished 2nd in the 1989 regional youth tournament at home, Latiff also received the award for the most wickets.
Other impressive performances came from Seuraj who hit a stroke-filled 143 against Paragon and 107 by Raja Ramoutar against Invincible.
But the 40-year-old Brown, who played 6 regional One-Day games and 2 First Class matches for Guyana in the 1995/96 season, proved to be the most consistent with the bat and tallied the most runs for the season to take the ‘most runs’ award.
The still very fit Brown who does a lot of running on the road in the mornings, also had a series of outstanding performances at the crease in the three-day tournament that the club participated in, and was also rewarded along with Moore, Seuraj, Ramoutar, Keith Kanhai, Thomas and Latiff.
Latiff told Kaieteur Sport from Trinidad that although he is not as fast as he used to be, he is now very experienced from so many years of playing the game and better understands how to ‘set up’ batsmen and exploit their weaknesses.
He opined that the standard of cricket in the West Indies is not as high as it was in the past and feels that the youngsters, many of them who play for their country, should be disappointed that older players continue to dominate club competitions.
The performance of the Guyanese pair was given national Media attention in the Twin-Island Republic with a story covering the Awards Ceremony in Monday’s Trinidad Newsday newspaper.
