Lying in a bed at the Georgetown Public Hospital for over a month now, is 59-year-old John July, whose injury came as a result of him being knocked down by Local Government Minister, Kellawan Lall. The man sustained injuries to his right leg.
July told this newspaper that he was given the option to either have his leg amputated and put on a prosthetic leg or place hot pack in his leg commonly known as steel. “Well I ain’t want to cut off my foot so I choose to put in the steel,” said the man.
The father of four, who was deemed by the relatives and friends who surrounded his bed as the sole bread winner of his family, told this publication that his injuries are causing him a great deal of discomfort.
Especially, since he cannot return to work as a law enforcement officer he asked, “How am I going too provided for my family?”
According to the man, who is expected to soon be released from the hospital, the Minister who knocked him down “never, one day came to see me”.
July said that his previous work mates would regularly visit him and show their support.
A close friend of the injured man said that “he needs assistance; he is an old man and got children to take care of.” Brian Sam, the man’s friend, also noted that children who are in their teens will need a lot.
John July was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was allegedly struck down by Minister of Local Government Kellawan Lall, on September 5. A special constable attached to the High Court, and his friend whom he identified as Colin, were struck down on the East Coast Demerara Public Road.
A policeman who witnessed the accident said that after the Minister struck down the two persons he sped away from the scene.
The source also told this publication that the Minister’s vehicle was not lighted and was veering between the lanes. The eyewitnesses added that the Minister’s son returned to the scene of the accident with the same vehicle and transported the injured persons to the hospital.
