The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) Inc. yesterday expressed optimism at meeting the second crop production target for this year.
According to the Corporation, there are some encouraging signs for the sugar industry and drew reference to the fact that for the second consecutive week, the Skeldon estate achieved the weekly production target of sugar produced.
Workers as a result have qualified for an extra day’s pay (WPI) and are being commended and encouraged to continue maximising on the current weather pattern towards ensuring the Skeldon Factory achieves its second crop sugar production target.
The Corporation said that it is confident that there is a sufficient supply of cane on the estates and the factory will continue to process the canes to achieve the second crop target.
This, it was pointed out is heavily dependent on the continuation of a good turnout by workers and the weather pattern until the end of this year.
“Additionally the Corporation has continued to supply power to GPL from its Co-generation facility making use of bagasse as the fuel to generate electricity supplied.”
The electricity generated from the bagasse has benefited residents as far as Mahaica on the East Coast of Demerara, according to GuySuCo.
Workers at that estate had just last month gone on strike during the height of full-fledged harvesting.
The strike was in response to the dismissal of four of their colleagues.
