People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Shadow Finance Minister, Winston Murray, still enjoys support among some of the party supporters that want to see him as Presidential Candidate.
This newspaper managed to make contact with several of the members of the party who said that despite the media blitz surrounding Former Brigadier David Granger they would still like to see Murray as the Presidential Candidate.
Dr Richard Van West Charles, who had initially returned to Guyana to challenge incumbent Leader Robert Corbin, subsequently threw his support behind Murray.
Dr Van West Charles when contacted recently said that he still supports Murray as the Presidential Candidate.
Another party member who has been an open supporter of Murray said that he believes that Murray is the best person to be the PNCR Presidential Candidate.
While most of the members of the party voiced their support they declined to be named, saying that while they support Murray, there is a process that has to be followed.
The members said that by attaching their name to the support at this stage could prejudice the process of selection of the Presidential Candidate for the Party.
Prior to the emergence of David Granger as a likely Presidential Candidate for the party, Murray was the name most referred to among the hierarchy of the party as best suited to fill that position, ever since Corbin has signaled his intention not to run in 2010.
The party has commenced the process for the identification of the party’s Presidential Candidate.
At this point in time the details of that process are still unclear.
In January of last year, following differences with the party on their position on the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union, Murray resigned as party Chairman and subsequently challenged Corbin for the leadership of the party.
He was unsuccessful in that bid.
