…we do jobs that are life threatening with no risk allowance
Climbing electrical power posts and disconnecting power lines are just two of the life risking duties linesmen at the Linden Electricity Company Incorporation (LECI) conduct every day.
Nearly two dozen of those men took to the streets and protested for two days for an increase in their salary. The men were forced to take action after several requests fell on deaf ears that were solicited for the past four years.
Yesterday morning, around 08:00 hours the protesting employees turned up for normal duty but were told by the company manager that he would have to receive word from the office in Georgetown before he can accept them back on as staff.
During last month the said employees approached the company manger and requested a raise in their salary and were instead told that it could not have been granted.
“We come to work every day and carry out tasks which are life threatening… not knowing if we will see our family again and when we ask the boss for an increase in our pay, he told us that his hands are tied”.
The workers told a Kaieteur News reporter that they do not have union representatives who will usually be assigned to keep the employees’ best interest at heart “no union person is here to help us… so we are left to accept whatever the company is doing to us.”
Allegations are being made that workers at Omai, Bosai and Guyana Power and Light receive far more than the Lindeners.
Several efforts were made by reporters to have the company’s spokesperson comment on the employees’ claims but these proved futile.
