Guyana host Jamaica, USVI & Grenada from Wednesday at Stadium
Intense rivalry will be the order of the day when the Caribbean Football Union World Under-20 qualifying competition kicks off with group action the Guyana National Stadium, Providence on Wednesday evening.
Guyana will oppose the United States Virgin Islands in their first game from 19:00hrs with opening play between Grenada and Jamaica from 17:00hrs.
In an interview with Kaieteur Sport last evening, Head Coach Gordon Braithwaite informed that his charges are doing well in their training sessions and are confident of doing themselves and country proud in this tournament.
Guyana’s ‘Junior Jaguars’ held Trinidad and Tobago to a 0-0 draw at the Providence Stadium on September 26, a performance that allowed the Technical staff to identify a number of grey areas in the play of the locals.
“We have been able to work on the weak areas we identified in that game against Trinidad and we are better prepared for the task at hand and that is to win this group and move on in the competition. The players have been responding very well at the training sessions and are confident of doing well.”
The training sessions are expected to be switched to the National Stadium today and tomorrow as they wind down preparations.
Some of the players who will be key to Guyana’s success are the Captain and central defender Colin Nelson who has senior team experience.
Ryan Crandon will team up with Nelson in central defence, Richie Richards another player with senior team experience is the number one goalkeeper.
Bevon Moseley, Les Charles Critchlow will lead the charge at midfield with the likes of Telson McKinnon, Sheldon Holder and Ulvis Mitchell hunting for goals up front.
Braithwaite said that Guyana’s chances of winning the group is as good as any other country and he is urging the public to come out and support their team by wearing gold or yellow.
