Dear Editor,
As time marches on, it is very clear that Guyana is in dire need of intelligent political leadership. If Guyana is to develop and remove itself from being a deeply impoverished nation, to one that provides adequately for its people while engaging in profitable industry, then it needs leadership that possesses foresight, wisdom, intellectual fortitude and motivation.
Guyana certainly does not need a father-giver as its leader, but one who can provide wholesome economic solutions to Guyanese so desperately trying to free themselves of poverty. Guyana has no time for brash, egotistical, uncouth and misguided political rhetoric from its leadership, but rather intelligent, tactful, politically decent and respectful deliveries that contribute to the further advancement of all Guyanese.
Constructive criticism helps in the modification of work and/or behaviour, ensuring a more advanced output is delivered. Personal attacks and insults offer nothing but disrespect. Guyana does not need political leadership that appears hopelessly hooked on ridiculing its opponents or anyone daring to offer a difference of opinion on its political demeanor and policies. Guyana is desperately looking for a leader who will demarcate his or her moral high ground and defend it with dignity and pride, while accommodating and respecting the opinions of others.
To berate some entities and members of society using insulting language at public forums is unacceptable behaviour for any political leader. Political leaders must respect the office they hold and respect the people who elected them to that office. After all, in a democratic society such as Guyana, political leaders are answerable to the people (the taxpayers).
If instead of transparent political leadership, Guyanese are given an opaque blur of political dealings, then it is the right of the people to question the government about its political maneuvers. Journalists must be allowed to do their work in presenting clear visible snapshots of what the government is doing at all times, to the people. Guyanese journalists ought not to be held in contempt by the political leadership for the service they provide the people of Guyana. The government must respect the media and its personnel.
Guyanese are really in need of mature political leadership!
Guyana needs political leadership that respects all people and is not afraid to demonstrate this publicly. Actually, Guyana needs a leader who has respect for him or herself. If our political leaders do not respect themselves first, then they certainly cannot be expected to respect others. And by that same token they cannot expect others to respect them.
Richard Francois
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
