Six division one players recognised

Six outstanding First Division players from the Ancient County were on Saturday last recognised by the Berbice Cricket Board for their outstanding contributions to cricket.
The six cricketers with a combined playing career of close to 100 years were honoured when the Board hosted its 2nd Annual Tribute to Retired Cricketers Programme at the Albion Community Centre.
Those recognised this year are Randolph Latcha and Jaipersaud Rawana of the Port Mourant Cricket Club, Horace Mc Donald and Adrian Amsterdam of the Blairmont Community Centre Cricket Club, Raymond Haniff of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and Rampersaud Ramcharitar of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club.
Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee and Public Relations Officer, Hilbert Foster commended the awardees as true ambassadors of Berbice cricket and thanked them for their service to the game.
Foster explained that the aim of the programme is to identify and honour past division one players whose contributions was of the highest order while at the same time being positive role models for young cricketers to emulate.
Berbice cricket, Foster stated was currently strong because of the solid foundation laid by those who were committed and disciplined in the past. He challenged the retired players to use their vast experiences to assist the current generation of players and encouraged them to play a part in making sure that their former clubs continue to produce outstanding players.
BCB President (Ag) David Black and Treasurer Anil Beharry both offered congratulations to the awardees, stating that the Board felt proud to honour them.
Black praised the Special Events Committee for leading a revolution in Berbice Cricket and also for hosting programmes to honour heroes of the County. President Black also highlighted the importance of rewarding people in their lifetime and praised the awardees as role model sportsmen whose contributions have had positive influences on the development of the game.
Beharry who played against all of the awardees spoke highly about their competitive spirit on the field and their ability to transform the game with high class performances.
Each of the awardees received a Tribute to Heroes Medallion along with a New GPC Hamper and two gifts from the BCB.
The Special Events Committee is expressing gratitude to New GPC Inc. and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for their assistance in co-sponsoring the programme.
