National boards to get 10% of their IPL players’ fee

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to give 10% of foreign players’ fee to the respective national boards. This was one of the points discussed threadbare at Sunday’s Governing Council meeting.
It is understood that the board has been contemplating this measure for quite some time.
The obvious reason for this step is to keep other boards, who are releasing their players for the league, happy. The other reason, of course, is to keep the players’ agents out of the arrangement.
“This is the opinion of the GC. We don’t want role of any agents,” BCCI president Shashank Manohar told DNA on Monday. National boards like the West Indies Cricket Board and New Zealand Cricket have, in the past, said that they should benefit from the cash-rich IPL as they spare their star players for the Twenty20 extravaganza.
This latest decision is also in tune with another important measure that the BCCI has taken with regard to the player management and contract.
From next year onwards, all the player contracts will be managed by the Board itself. Which means, it will be a tri-partite agreement among the players, franchise and the BCCI, unlike in the present system in which the contracts are signed between the players and the franchisees.
“All player contracts will now be managed by BCCI and signed by BCCI along with the franchise and the player. A new player registration and contract management process will be detailed soon. “No player contracts can be signed until then. Player regulation for 2011 season will be circulated soon to all franchisees which will detail the player contract, registration and signing process,” the BCCI said in a release on Sunday.
The significance of the measure is to eliminate any kind of middlemen in the process. The Board anyway does not deal with middlemen but there were instances when the franchises had to pay a certain amount to the agents.
“This is a very constructive and positive decision. It keeps the boards happy. The agents should also not come in the way. They should come into the picture only when there is a roster of recognised agents by the IPL,” one franchise official said.
He also welcomed the BCCI decision to be part of the agreement. “By involving itself in the player-team agreements, the Board has eliminated teams from having any kind of arrangement. Everything now will be in black and white. There won’t be any outside arrangements,” he said.
The BCCI officials said they will ensure that the payments are made by the franchise to the other boards. There were 65 foreign players from six countries in the IPL 3.
