Criminals reduced to renting firearm
Commissioner of Police Henry Greene, at a recent press briefing, disclosed that a Special Firearms Unit has been established with the aim of tracking illegal guns.
The commissioner explained that the Unit which operates mainly out of the Criminal Investigations Unit has seen some success.
He added that he was of the view that some persons were renting “illegal firearms” to commit crimes.
He explained that although the robbery under arms statistics for this year does not show an increase, the police have been observing the rented firearm trend.
Greene further stated that the police have found evidence to substantiate his statements.
“The police have found persons taking back these illegal firearms after committing the acts.”
The statistics would show that compared to last year the figures for robbery under arms was 453, while this year it has been 356, so far.
Revealing other figures, the Commissioner said that the police have so far seized 57 illegal firearms for this year, two less than for the same period last year.
