As the nation’s top amateur boxers prepare once again for fistic duty, beverage giants, Ansa McAl has once again demonstrated a true corporate spirit when the executives of that company acquiesced to a handsome package that will assist in offsetting the huge expenses required to host activities.
Yesterday morning, two of Ansa McAl’s employees, Public Relations Officer, Darshanie Yussuf and Marketing Assistant (Stag Beer), John Maikoo visited the Main Street office of President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Steve Ninvalle and formally handed over the gift.
The GABA boss and executive team accepted the package on behalf of his executives and the boxers and relayed his heartfelt gratitude to the Ansa McAl representatives. He further assured them of the value of the sponsorship towards the development of local pugilists. Both Mr. Maikoo and Ms Yussuf endorsed their company’s commitment to the development of the young pugilists even as they wished them well in their future undertakings.
Meanwhile, the tournament, dubbed the Michael Parris Open Boxing championship in honour of our lone Olympics bronze medalist, gets underway tomorrow evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue and culminates on Sunday. The organizers have promised action packed encounters and according to Mr. Terrence Poole, the best boxers will be on show. He pointed out that Republican lightweight pugilist Nankumar Singh has already indicated an interest in participating.
This means that an imminent clash with his nemesis, Mervyn Ageday is in the making. The latter boxer has won both of their encounters so far but they were so close that some of the boxing pundits have questioned the verdict. The stocky republican would be coming with fire in his eyes, attempting to turn the tables.
Another boxer to keep an eye on is Benjamin Henry, a relatively new boxer on the scene from the North West Boxing gym. He has already created waves in the ring, winning the Novices championships. He was also the runner up in the intermediate tournament. If this youngster trains to the hilt, he would be a force to be reckoned with as was evident in previous encounters. Other noteworthy pugilists expected to grace the ring are Stephon Gouveia, the Jordon brothers, Michael and Dexter, Clevon Rock and Devon Boatswain among others.
Coordinator of bouts, Terrence Poole said that all systems are in place for a successful tournament and urged the public to support the show especially since most of the youngsters are now beginning to gel into true warriors.
Of the more than 90 boxers scheduled to participate in the tournament, thirty resides out of Georgetown. These boxers will officially weigh in this afternoon at 18:00hrs while those residing out of Georgetown weigh in on Friday staring at 08:00hrs.
