Cable operators in Guyana, who run their business without a licence, might be given the green light to expand operations, President Bharrat Jagdeo indicated yesterday.
The Head of State met the cable operators at the Guyana International Conference Centre, where he noted that there has been a demand for cable services, especially in the outlying areas, and based on this, the government was prepared to tell operators they could expand.
Jagdeo had met with the operators in July 2007. At that time, he had put a freeze on any expansion.
However, even though the President might favour relaxing the “no expansion” rule, he said cable operators who are allowed to run their business could not be expected to automatically qualify for legal status when government puts regulations in place.
Further, Jagdeo was not definitive as to whether imminent broadcast legislation would cover cable operators.
“The cable operators tend to rebroadcast right now but I have not examined how we deal with rebroadcasts because you can’t have a rigid monitoring of content as you do with local broadcasts because they would have to have a dedicated portion of local content,” Jagdeo said.
Among the cable operators in Guyana are Carib Atlantic Cable, Bartica Communications Network, E3 Communications, Linden Cable Network and Infinity Telecommunications Inc.
In July 2007, the Office of the President served notices of closure on Infinity Telecommunications Inc., Linden Cable Network, Bartica Communication Network, and another operator in Berbice.
Additionally, the Office of the President served notice on Atlantic Cable Network (ACN), based at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, to cease expanding its network and for the company to limit its operation to two villages along the East Bank of Demerara.
