The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) was a buzz of activity on Saturday last when the Japan Karate Association/World Federation Guyana conducted its 3rd grading examinations for the year with a total of seventy four (74) students attaining higher ranks.
Nine to 12 year-olds Arianna Phagoo and Javon Fraser were both promoted from 2nd to 1st KYU Brown belt respectively both demonstrating the standards required to advance.
Klaus Chin, Shankar Singh and Shermon Kyte received their 2nd KYU Brown belts from 3rd. Still in the Brown belt category – three students gained promotion from 3rd to 2B KYU, one from 4th KYU purple to 3B KYU while Damian Kerry, Kelwyn Griffith and Marlon George attained Brown belt status from 4th KYU Purple to 3kyu Brown.
In the Purple belt ranking, a total of seven students received promotions from 5th to 4th KYU and six from 5th to 4B KYU Purple.
The Green belt ranking saw two students being promoted from 6 KYU Green to 5B KYU Purple and two from 6 KYU Green to 5 KYU Purple. Two were promoted from 7 KYU Orange to 6 KYU Green and three moved from 7 KYU Orange to 6B KYU Green. Eleven students attained 7 KYU Orange belt from yellow and five moved to 8 KYU 2nd yellow from 1st yellow, age group being 5 to 6 year olds.
In the largest category, 23 white belts were tested. Eight moved from 10 KYU white to 9 KYU -1st yellow, one moved from 10 KYU to 8 KYU. Eleven were promoted from 10 KYU white belts to 8 KYU 2nd yellow.
Berbician, Shairaz Hack, Natasha Persaud, and Nirvanie Persaud performed outstanding in this category moving from 10 KYU White to 7B KYU Orange belt.
Local 4th Dan Chief Instructor Sensei Christopher Chaves who conducted this examination noted that he was pleased with the performances and is encouraging students to continue regular training.
He advised that the next grading examination is set for November under the watch of First Class Japanese Master Yasuaki Nagatomo.
Additionally, he has mentioned that their immediate attention will be shifted towards their much anticipated local annual National tournament. Preparation for this event commences with a training Camp Aug 27-28 at Camp Kayuka and then the grand tournament in October where Top performing karatekas in Kata and Kumite (adults and children) will form the elite team to represent Guyana in Santa Fe New Mexico at the 2011 Pan American Karate Championships.

Seven Seas 11-race cycling set for National Park on Saturday
Teach Them Young riders to showcase talent
Cyclists participating in the current ongoing National Sports Commission (NSC) Teach Them Young cycling camp will have the opportunity to show off what they have been learning so far when another 11 race competition comes off on Saturday at the National Park.
Saturday’s activity, which will have as its feature event the invitation and schools boys 35-lap contest, is sponsored by Seven Seas for the 7th year.
The Teach Them Young programme commenced on July 12 and will end on September 4.
Events set for Saturday:
12 to 14 yrs open – 3 Laps BMX boys 12 to 14 yrs – 3 Laps
BMX Boys 9 to 12 yrs – 3 Laps
BMX Boys 6 to 9 yrs – 2 Laps
BMX Girls 6 to 12 yrs – 1 Lap
BMX Boys Open – 3 Laps Veteran U- 50 yrs – 5 Laps
Veteran O- 50 yrs – 5 Laps Juveniles – 10 Laps Upright Cyclists – 5 Laps School Boys & Invitation – 35 Laps
The winner of the last year’s main event in 2008 (event was not held last year) was Darren Allen in a time of one hour 28 minutes 02 seconds with Berbice based Neil Reece capturing the juvenile race.
Seven Seas Brand Manager, Mrs. June Ann Eastman, will be on hand to assist with the distribution of prizes to the respective winners and top performers.
