The lesser placed teams have sounded a collective warning to their more well placed rivals that the second and final round of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League sponsored by FIFA under the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF Initiative will be fierce and nothing must be taken for granted.
Given the results of the three matches on the weekend football fans and followers are in for some exciting games. Defending champions and current leaders Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United boasting a roster of big names were held to a 0-0 stalemate by bottom of the table Seawall United of West Demerara in a robust encounter, the feature game at the GFC Ground on Sunday evening.
In the opening salvo, the Guyana Defence Force once again prevailed over arch rivals Sunburst Camptown by a 1-0 margin, Warren Gilkes netting the winner 11 minutes to game time.
Up at the Bartica Community Centre Ground, it was another upset with the home team, Liquid Gold, turning in a solid performance to take full points from second placed Rosignol United also by a 1-0 margin.
Both games at the GFC saw a plethora of goals going wide of the target with quite a few shots hitting the uprights and cross bar on the night.
Alpha’s ultra offensive mood was effectively countered by some solid and consistently robust defending by Seawall who never really threatened in the attacking third.
Alpha’s lethal scoring duo of Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams and Dwain ‘Dungin’ Jacobs were kept quiet all night by some fearless and effective work at the back by Zevon Atkinson, Ike Garraway, Delon Josiah and Goalkeeper Marvin Griffith among others.
Alpha did create numerous scoring opportunities but it was just not their night to score and when the final whistle sounded, it meant that Seawall ensured an equal share of the spoils with the defending champs who now move to 24 points and Seawall to 5 both still occupying the top and bottom positions on the points table respectively.
The Army too, created lots of chances against Camptown but could not make it right when it mattered, Camptown with their main striker Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington, found it difficult to penetrate the Army’s airtight defence.
The deadlock was finally broken by the probing GDF side in the 79th minute, Warren Gilkes capitalising on some poor goalkeeping by Richie Richards who in advancing to gather a crossed ball missed completely, Gilkes with an open goal at his disposal calmly helped the ball on its way into the nets.
At the Bartica Community centre Ground it was another tough clash between home team Liquid Gold and the visiting Rosignol United.
The fact that Rosignol took the field as the second place to leaders Alpha and Liquid Gold occupying the penultimate slot did not intimidate the home side backed by their supporters.
Rosignol did enjoy the better of the exchanges early on but the home team kept them at bay. In an unfortunate swing of things for Rosignol, second half substitute Hugh Barratt who spent 10 minutes on the pitch was booked twice in that period after touching the ball only 3 times.
His expulsion in the 58th minute swung the advantage Liquid Gold’s way and they made it count for them when Andel Norton rocked the nets in the 69th, effectively sealing full points for his side. League action will continue on September 5.
Points Standings: Alpha United (24), Rosignol United (17), Camptown (16), GDF (16), Milerock (15), Buxton United (12), Victoria Kings (11), Liquid Gold (10), Bakewell Topp XX (8), Seawall FC (5).
