-cites illness, unpreparedness as reasons
By Edison Jefford
Guyana’s international middle-distance runner, Marian Burnett, have opted out of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October, citing an illness that developed at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games as the primary reason.
Burnett’s unavailability for the Commonwealth Games was communicated to the President of the Guyana Olympic Association, Juman Yassin, who held a press briefing yesterday to update those media houses present on Burnett’s and other developments.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport from the United States of America, where she resides, Burnett stated that she had an illness at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico where she was forced to take oxygen at one stage, and which prevented her from serious preparation.
“I fell ill in Puerto Rico and after I returned home I was suppose to return to the European circuit but I could not prepare for that because of my illness so I do not think that it would be wise to be considering the Commonwealth Games either,” Burnett said.
“I am not fit and that is the truth. I was not even aware that I was on the Commonwealth team to go to India. I just cannot go those big championships like that. I was not training and I choose to not to compete in the Commonwealth Games,” she continued.
The CAC bronze medallist and Pan American multi-medallist indicated that she developed some serious breathing problems in Puerto Rico last month, which worsened when she had difficulties breathing on the plane back to the United States from Mayaguez.
Kaieteur Sport understands that Athletics Association of Guyana President, Colin Boyce updated Yassin on the status of Burnett prior to yesterday’s disclosure. The Olympic and Athletics bodies are likely to consider a possible replacement for Burnett.
Boyce informed that the two relevant authorities have until this week to submit their substitute to the Local Organising Committee in Delhi. Boyce added that US-based Guyanese sprinter Jeremy Bascom is being considered to replace an ill-fated Burnett.
The Athletics Association head said that Bascom unofficially ran 10.00 seconds in the 100m at a meet in New Jersey but he is awaiting confirmation on the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ratification of the fast time and the meet.
“If the IAAF endorses that time and meet, then it would also mean that Guyana has a new 100m record holder. We did not submit his name initially but we are looking at getting him accredited for the meet in India.
We have to confirm that this week,” Boyce said.
The Olympic Association identified four spots on the national Commonwealth Games contingent for the Athletics Association. The other three spots went to Aliann Pompey, Cleveland Forde and Adam Harris, all of whom, along with Bascom, also went to Puerto Rico.
Police arrest Fire Service & Prisons
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) turned the tables on the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) when the 2nd leg of the Ministry of Home Affairs Inter Agency Domino competition was contested at the Guyana Prison Service Sports Club, Camp and Norton Streets on Friday afternoon.
Police were in a no nonsense mood rattling up 93 games led by the maximum 18 from Martin Pestano to dampen the spirits of the Fire Service back in second on 74 games with the host team Prisons bring up the rear on 63.Pestano received excellent support from Ann Thompson who contributed 17 games with 16 each from Lloyd Muesa and June Edwards as Police put away their opponents with disdain.
Von Venture managed 14 for the Fire Service who flames were doused early by Police. The top marker for the Prisons who were not allowed to venture too far out of their cell was June Lewis with 13.
Taking a stroll down lover’s lane was Julius Samuels of Police whose involuntary walk was engineered by June Lewis.
The 3rd leg of the ongoing series will be held at the Guyana Service Sports Club on Friday September 10.
According to organiser Ovid Glasgow, the primary aim of the tournament is to foster a spirit of camaraderie among the members of the various entities.
He expressed gratitude to Pay Less Get More of Regent Street, sponsor of the trophies that were presented to the winning team and the top marker.
