Friendship house saved from total devastation
A fire that appeared to be electrical in origin, gutted the lower flat of lot 34 Friendship, East Coast Demerara yesterday, with quick action by neighbours saving the life of 75-year-old Vera Seaforth.
At the scene, neighbours and fire fighters tried valiantly to save valuable items within the structure, however, all were either partially destroyed or water soaked.
One neighbour said, at 13:35 hrs she heard a crackling sound and dogs barking, and upon looking out her back door from across the road she noticed smoke and fire at the bottom flat of the house.
“The first think I think of was the old lady, and after we get she out, we try with the fire.”
She, along with other neighbours, grabbed buckets and retrieved water from a nearby trench.
They broke the door to the upper flat and water was taken upstairs to wet the floors to assist with extinguishing the fire. Stacy Seaforth who has lived in the lower flat with her mother Vera, for the past five years, said, she left for work at 07:30hrs yesterday and later in the day one of her neighbours who knew about the fire visited her workplace and related the distressing news.
The tearful woman disclosed that she is thankful to her neighbours for assisting in extinguishing the fire, and saving her mother from any harm. “I heard the firemen say it is an electrical problem… I don’t know where we would be going now.”
