Dear Editor,
As Guyana female National Basketballers prepare for International engagements against North Carolina All Stars and Antigua and Barbuda, it’s important to pay homage to the players who blazed the trail and set the foundation that led to the 1996 triumph in Trinidad.
Yes we are talking about the first female National Basketball team that contested three matches against Suriname at the Sports Hall during 1976 September.
In the opening encounter Guyana led by Barbara Small lost 67 to 37 pts, but rebound in game two to defeat their Dutch opponents 42 to 33 pts. Patricia Waterman top scored for Guyana with 18 pts while Joy Merchant lent admirable support with 10pts, Avril Edmondson also had 8 pts.
In the deciding game of the series the experienced Surinamese humbled the host 65 to 50 points. For the visitors – Dulcine Ceca scored 12 pts, Helene Renferum 13 pts – while for Guyana Joy Merchant had a game high of 17 pts, Patricia Waterman chipped in with 15pts.
