Another Brazilian miner has been murdered in Guyana’s interior. Forty-five year-old Jose Rodriguez De Oliviera was hacked to death by one of his colleagues in a mining camp at Aranka Backdam, Cuyuni River.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning and police confirmed that the suspect, a male Amerindian, has been taken into custody.
According to reports, De Oliviera and the suspect were imbibing in the mining camp when a heated argument broke out over liquor. It is alleged that De Oliveira, who was armed with a cutlass assaulted the suspect, who in turn stabbed him in his chest.
The suspect then relieved De Oliviera of the cutlass and hacked him to death as he lay on the ground. Residents of the community arrested the suspect and subsequently handed him over to the police who took him into custody.
De Oliviera’s body is presently lying at the Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting a post mortem examination.
