Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad has noted that all of the hard work that has gone into promoting Guyana as a tourist destination may be undone by the condition of the city.
According to the Minister, visitors to Guyana are beginning to complain about the garbage issues facing the city according to one Minister.
He said, “The garbage situation is terrible and it is having a negative impact on tourism.”
Prashad said that his office has been discussing the matter with the tour operators and members of the Private Sector, who he said have offered their assistance. He was at the time referring to the provision of five trucks with drivers to the City Council to aid in garbage collection around the city – a contribution from the Private Sector in an effort to see the crisis mitigated.
The members of the Private Sector have also been trying to convince the collection agents – Puran Brothers and Cevon’s Waste Management to resume their rounds in the city, however, the millions of dollars in debt piled up to these companies is proving a hindrance. In recent weeks the two waste collecting agencies have suspended their services to the City because of the Council’s lack of payment.
Minister Prashad said, “We would like to see the Mayor & City Council do their jobs.” He went on to say, “We are paying our rates and taxes, and the money is squandered, there is no accountability and then the citizens of Georgetown are made to suffer.”
The Minister also urged citizens to do their part in keeping their immediate environs clean as well. He said that he was hoping that the City Council will get their act together and also work towards more effective and efficient management of their finances.
