– Street Series also in the making
Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) with its Pepsi brand on Friday pumped $1M into the continuation of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division I League and an upcoming Street Series competition.
“I personally want to thank DDL and Pepsi for their timely input into the sport; this I say because it couldn’t have come at a better time. Before now, the clubs were playing just in the League for basically sweat and love of the game, but now we would be able to award them financially” Rose said.
He explained that the Street Series Play-Offs will see the top four finishers of the League heading to face each other in the lucrative best-of three series.
He said that providing that the GABA get sponsorships, they will always be able to award teams.
Rose did not indicate the sums of money that will be given to the teams in the League and the “Street Series Play-Offs”. He informed that the Georgetown sub-association will have to meet and decide on the prize structure for the events.
Pepsi brand manager at DDL, Alexis Crawford, said at the presentation that the company is always ready to support activities that will positively impact young people. She stated that DDL did not hesitate to support the GABA’s programmes.
“DDL and Pepsi are always ready to support any activity which will positively channel the energies of young Guyanese people and there was no hesitation on our part to come on board” Crawford told the media.
Crawford added that she expects the tournaments to be highly competitive, which will help to develop sportsmen and women in Guyana. She encouraged patrons to come out in support of Guyana’s athletes, who she referred to as “talented”.
All the remaining games in the League will be played outdoor at the Burnham Basketball Court, which is undergoing its first of several phases of rehabilitation.
