Digical to sponsor major track and field meet in Linden
Local, regional and international telecommunication giants, Digicel Guyana will sponsor a major track and field meet that is set for the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground, Linden on August 29, and is billed as the premier competition for top athletes.
Digicel has confirmed their major sponsorship of the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic, which should attract the participation of the leading Clubs and athletes in Guyana. The event was being mulled for sometime as Coordinators fine-tuned its aspects.
The competition emerged after the President’s Invitational, which was a part of the last Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) calendar, disappeared, and after the son of former track and field star, the late Elton Jefford, Edison Jefford submitted a proposal.
The vision of the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic, therefore, was to merge the Grand Prix format of the President’s Invitational with idea of the Coordinators to host a prestigious and impressive meet aimed at returning the sport to its highest point.
Since the MSC Ground is the venue where Jefford would have began his career and had most of his memorable performances, it was thought that Linden should have the honour of hosting the inaugural edition of the competition that is set to become annual.
The Coordinators have assured that the meet will have an international trademark since most of the aspects that are necessary for its success will be professionally managed. The standards will be nothing short of international and in accordance with the IAAF.
While the details of the sponsorship agreement between Digicel and the Coordinators of the meet are still be finalised, Kaieteur Sports understand that the arrangement will be lucrative, and clubs will benefit since the cash prizes up for grabs will also be major.
Clubs will compete for cash prizes and trophies with the top male and female getting prizes. The Clubs will be formally written to today and a Technical Committee, with Boyce at its helm, was appointed to deal with the scientific aspects of the competition.
