Windwards beat Guyana by 7 wickets to take lead
The Windward Islands beat Guyana 7 wicket yesterday on the final day of their 3rd round TCL regional under-19 cricket match in St Lucia to move to the top of the points table on 21 points.
Set 88 to win, the Windward Islands resumed the final day on 39-2 and although they lost another wicket, they reached 91-3 to register their first victory at this level against Guyana since 2005 in St Vincent at 10:35hrs.
Left-arm spinner Anthony Adams took 2-30 while leg-spinner Amir Khan, the leading bowler after three rounds, took 1-54 to move to 22 wickets in the competition.
Guyana were always going to struggle once they were dismissed for 51 in their first innings and although the Islanders, who last won the title in 2001, slumped from 179-5 to 190 all out in 11 minutes at the start of the second day, the first innings lead was just too much for the South Americans, hunting their first title since 2007.
Khan top scored with an unbeaten 41 as Guyana fell for 209 in their second innings and although the Windwards lost two early wickets in their victory chase, their only real concern at the start of yesterday would have been rain which affected the other 3rd round games yesterday.
Guyana, who remain on 15 points from three games, face Barbados in their next match from tomorrow and will need a win to stay in the hunt for their 13th title at this level.
