Veteran driver Jad Rahaman speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that there is no doubt the sport of motor racing is gaining popularity among sporting fans and could be considered as a mainstream sport right now.

According to Rahaman, who emerged from a family of racers dating back over 40 years, he believes that with the increase influx of competitors gravitating to the sport, the Club will soon have to gear itself for such, while existing systems must be enforced and ones created to keep the sport safe.

Rahaman, who will be competing at the July 18 Race Meet believes that it is time a driving school be set up to assist in teaching newcomers the real art of driving so that the sport continues to remain free from serious accidents.

The elder statesman of the sport said that drivers entering the sport now have some very fast cars, but lack the necessary experience to deal with certain critical situations on the track and it is time the Body responsible for the sport here begin to address issues regarding training and safety more directly.

“A lot of drivers are entering the sport with very fast cars, but limited experience driving on the Circuit and that could pose a danger to other drivers, but that danger could be reduced through the setting up of a driving school,” Rahaman felt.

He added that the school would be tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that drivers are properly trained after which they go through an observatory period, before moving up in class.

Rahaman stressed that he would like to see a lot more training for the rookies whose cars are getting faster and faster, but very often the drivers’ abilities are not on par, while indicating that his opinion is in no way meant to disrespect of degrade anyone, but rather should be taken as a positive judgment geared at attempting to uplift the standard of the sport.
