Guyana could start as one of the favourites to take the inaugural West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Caribbean 20/20 cricket tournament which will be played this month in Barbados and Trinidad.
Guyana won the first ever 20/20 tournament in the Caribbean when they defeated Trinidad and Tobago in the Stanford 20/20 series in Antigua in 2006.
The Guyanese failed to successfully defend their title in the last Stanford tournament in 2008 when Trinidad and Tobago emerged victorious to book a spot in the last Champions Club League in India last year.
The Guyana side has not yet been selected and the national selectors will do so after the completion of the Digicel National 20/20 competition this weekend at the Guyana National Stadium and it will not be surprising if some ‘new faces’ are selected for the shortest form of the game.
It is understood that Guyana could be without their most successful West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul due to his English cricket commitments while the injury that kept Ramnaresh Sarwan out of the Test series against South Africa is also a concern for Guyana who face the Windwards in their opening game at the Kensington Oval from 16:00hrs on July 23. Travis Dowlin and Narsingh Deonarine should lead the batting.
The bowling department looks problematic with left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul unavailable due to his High Performance Centre (HPC) commitments in Barbados.
Guyana are in group ‘B’ with Barbados, Windward Islands and Combined Campuses & Colleges while defending Regional champions T&T are in the other group with Jamaica , Leeward Islands and guest team Canada.
The winner of the competition will represent the West Indies in this year’s Champions Club League in South Africa in September and if Canada wins the second placed team will travel to South Africa.
Guyana play CCC in their next match from 14:00hrs on July 25 before taking on Barbados in their first game in the Trinidad leg of the competition on July 29 from 16:00hrs.
The semis are set for July 30 and the Final the next day under lights at the Queens Park Oval.
